• Have an understanding of the number system.

• Have confidence and competence with numbers and measures.

• Acquire a repertoire of computational skills.

• Possess the inclination and ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts.

• Possess the desire and ability to be accurate to a degree relevant to the problem at hand.

• Develop and apply their information technology (IT) capability in their study of Mathematics.

• Acquire basic tools for further educational advancement including the study of science, preparation for trades and crafts.

An IGS child should:-

• Read and write confidently, fluently and with understanding.
• Be able to orchestrate a full range of reading cues (phonetic, graphic and contextual) to monitor their reading and correct their own mistakes.
• Understand the sound and spelling system and use this to read and spell accurately.
• Have fluent, legible and consistent handwriting.
• Have an interest in words and their meanings and develop a growing vocabulary.
• Know, understand and be able to write a range of genres in fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
• Plan, draft, revise and edit their own writing.


Speaking and listening

• Talk about the matters of immediate interest e.g. self, family, school, environmental and global issues.
• Listen to others and respond appropriately.
• Give account of things around them.
• Know the importance of clear diction and intonation.
• Sustain concentration.


Writing

• Pupils should be able to write simple and correct sentences.
• They should be able to identify full stops, commas and question marks.
• They should be able to illustrate their work (using simple diagrams).
• They should be able to write in paragraphs and organise their thoughts in sequence.
• They should be able to use their imaginations and think critically.


Reading

• They should be able to recognise words in simple texts.
• They should be able to use their knowledge of letters and sound- symbol relationship to read words and establish meanings when reading alone.

The aims and objectives of teaching science are to:

• Lay a solid foundation in Science by introducing the basic processes and skills of science to the children.

• Enable the pupils to develop team spirit in the course of their intellectual development.

• Provide opportunities for the children to develop manipulative and psychomotor skills through concrete experiences.

• Develop and sustain the interest of an IGS pupil in Science through appreciation of beauty and orderliness in nature.

• Develop problem – solving skills of the children to make them self-confident and self-reliant.

• Explore and discover skills in everyday life situations through higher thinking abilities acquired in Science

• Develop the ability to deduce inferences from experiments and other events happening around them.

• Use the knowledge of ICT to develop, explore and contribute meaningfully to the world of technology.

We believe strongly that there is the need for young learners to develop a relationship with the natural world by giving them the chance to explore it and the ability of such to stay with them for the rest of their lives; leading them to start locally and end globally.

At the end of the sixth year, an IGS child should be able to:

• Understand and appreciate fully the basics of human and interpersonal behaviour and how this affects the individual, the group and the community as a whole.

• Hold an open and honest exploration of individual and community attitudes, values and beliefs within a safe and supportive environment.

• Assess their responsibility and right as members of a community and to appreciate diversity and differences between individuals

• Develop mutual respect and support for each other and make informed decisions about issues discussed.

• Encourage and develop the natural sense of wonder that young learners have about the world in which they live.

• Answer their own questions about their surroundings and stimulate a desire for ever-increasing knowledge and understanding of the world and the peoples in it.

• Learn where places are and what it might actually be like to live there.

• Interpret events and issues in a country's history and their impact on the people and the world.
