What is 21st Century Learning?
Learning; the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or being taught (as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary), remains the same in its core, but the methods of learning has taken several forms, from the latter part of the 20th Century, to the 21st Century, with focus on technology and economy.
In the 21st Century, critical thinking, digital literacy, collaboration, communication and problem solving has center stage in the skills and abilities students must acquire to excel as part of a society in the digital future.
IT’S EFFECTS ON EDUCATION.
Sir Ken Robinson, in his book “OUT OF OUR MINDS”, wrote that “The more complex the world becomes, the more creative we need to be to meet its challenges.”
Educators are expected to prepare students for a world, where the concept of “success” has adopted a different ideology. Any successful individual is expected to have the skill-sets to work and communicate on a global scale from one location, learn to outsource and designate tasks, excel in a working environment where working 9am to 5pm is obsolete etc. Educators must be involved in all processes and reforms of the 21st Century — Learning is key.
IGS, AT THE FOREFRONT.
Educators must adopt 21st Century leaning methods focused on:
- Forward thinking
- Use of technology
- Encouraging collaboration (student-student collaboration, student-teacher collaboration)
- Adaptability to change etc.
